Penemuel (Pen) fell from grace over a millennium ago, yet there are still times she questions her decision to follow her twin brother, Azael, to Hell. Now that the archangel Michael has returned, threatening Lucifer’s vie for the throne, she begins questioning everything she has always believed.

As Hell prepares for war – spreading a demonic virus and pilfering innocent souls to build an army – the lines separating the worlds blur. Fates erase and the future is left unwritten. Azael is determined that he and his sister will continue to serve as demons together, but for the first time in her life, Pen is not ruled by destiny. She has the freedom of choice.

With choice comes sacrifice, and Pen must decide which side she’s willing to risk everything fighting for: the light, or the dark.

First of all, I would like to thank Patchwork Press for supplying me with a copy of this book via NetGallery in exchange for an honest review.

I went into Ignite with an open mind – the synopsis sounded intriguing and I haven’t read many angel books so I decided to go for it, not knowing what to expect.

Cutesy romance, action, a focus on siblings, great characters, moral struggles, emotional manipulation (as in, mine were being tossed around like a rowboat in a storm, out on the open sea)… Ignite was just such a brilliant read.

Now one of my favourite angel books, Ignite is right up there with the Sweet Evil trilogy by Wendy Higgins and Cassandra Clare’s Shadowhunter chronicles.

The characters are what made this book for me. Aside from Ariel and Sablo, I loved all of the characters. That said, they were still very well done.

Ever so sarcastic and dark, I actually really liked Azael – I’m not even entirely sure why. I also really enjoyed  how his and Pen’s relationship was explored, their centuries of history together and dependence upon each other. Also *cough* telepathy *cough*.

Gavin made a brief appearance, in which I grew to love him too.

Pen and Michael were just so cute together. Their relationship evolved really well and there were several moments when I literally had to stop reading and take a moment to squeal and aww about how cute they were – I’m not even joking. Their love of books, the cave and the stars are particularly of note.

Overall, I really enjoyed Ignite and recommend it to people interested in a YA book featuring angels and demons, a complicated sibling relationship, a great romance and are prepared for a potentially emotional read (I found it so, but I’m not sure if others will).

I am not entirely sure when I will be continuing on with the series – they were previously available on NetGallery, but have now been archived. However, I am quite intrigued to discover how this series progresses.

On a side note, I have recently been watching Erica’s YouTube channel and she seems to be a really cool person.
